About
The story starts many years back around the age of 5. I lived underneath a flight path that was used by the Belgian military on a daily basis. I still remember the screaming sound of an F16 coming in very fast and passing by followed by the rumbling sound of the jet engine – this made chills run down my spine with the tingle of excitement.
I think that period in my life made such an impression I was hooked for life.
Around the age of 8 I was sure, someday I would fly a plane.
With the years passing by my affection for everything flying only grew.
As a real plane was still far out of reach, I started to build model RC (Radio Control) planes around the age of 12 and entered the local RC flying club at the age of 13.
This was the real start of my adventure as an aviator. Progressing rapidly in this new found hobby I
managed to get a decent level of aerobatic flying and enjoyed it immensley!
At the age of 15 the next step of the adventure came into being, I I saw the first video of a helicopter flying 3D at 3d masters and I told myself then next year I want to stand there!
This started my fascination with RC helicopters.
I picked up a second hand helicopter and started to fly. In a matter of weeks I was doing loops, flips, rolls, autorotations, progressing very fast in this part of RC flying but I didn’t manage to be at the 3D masters after one year. However, I did manage to land my first sponsor contract with Thunder Tiger. The year after I entered the 3D masters known back then as the “3D World Heli Championship” of 3D flying.
As I was so absorbed in radio control The desire to fly a real plane disappeared a bit from my mind but not totally gone and replaced by the fast going competition world.
Now sponsored I traveled the world to fly competitions and demonstrations, from Las Vegas to Germany to Italy and to the rest of Europe. This continued for many years.
More and more sponsors joined over the years and I was able to represent the biggest and the best companies doing what I loved most – a dream come true!
During my travels I met a wonderful lady called Kim at an event and she shared that same passion as me. She started to travel to events with me flying RC helicopters and being part of this incredible journey.
In 2014 we joined forces and became partners for life, in that same year the both of us joined the SAB heli division team. We are still representing them and
together we kept traveling the world enjoying our adventure at its fullest.
In 2018 our team expanded and our first son Lucas was born. He joined us at the first event around the age of 3 months and growing up with planes and helicopters around him his affection for helicopters has come very fast.
The same year my friend (also a Jonas) took me up in his Pitts S2B and showed me what real(!) flying was about. This flight got me hooked back on my child’s dream to be able to fly a real plane.
In 2020 COVID hit and the world of events stopped overnight.
During this period we moved to our new house that’s next to a recreation flying field. As competitions/events had stopped it enabled me to revert to the original passion – flying real plane.
I therefore entered the local flying school and started the theory training, albeit with some delay due to COVID.
In 2022 another team member joined the force – Noah, our second son. He is already cheering next to the flightline and joining us during the travels and events.
I had my first flights in a real plane in September 2022 with my excellent instructor Johan and managed to get solo in the same year. From that moment I was hooked on real flying and a new world opened up for me.
Both RC and real flying are now a big part of our lives and I still have many dreams and accomplishments to achieve. One of these is the
idea of owning a real plane or even better building one myself.
